Understanding The Instagram Algorithm For Hashtags
People use hashtags on Instagram so other people can discover their content
Hashtags are a way of searching Instagram for content you don't "follow"
When you post a picture with hashtags, your enabling your content to be found by other like minded people.
For example: If your selling lipstick you might use #lipstick so anyone who searching the hashtag #lipstick will find your content.
But it's a bit more complicated than that.
Millions of people are using the Hashtag #lipstick
So your chances of being found on that hashtag are very low.
In other words, there is too much competition.
Instagram separates hashtags into two categories.
Top Posts and Most Recent.
Top Posts at the top and Most Recent on the bottom.
Because millions of people are using the Hashtag #lipstick all day long, your post will only show up in Most Recent for a couple of seconds.
And because Instagram favors people with large followings and tons of likes on their picture, you wont show up in Top Posts either.
The people that show up in Top Posts have millions of followers and they get thousands of likes on their pictures within seconds.
When they hashtag #lipsitck they show up at the top of the page under Top Posts.
And they gain even more followers this way.
So how do you beat the Instagram algorithm?

Researching hashtags is crucial to your success on Instagram.
You need to search out hashtags that are relevant to you or your business.
Once you identify those hashtags, you need to find less popular versions of those hashtags.
For example: #lipstick has over 19 million posts on Instagram.
The competition is too high.
Find a smaller hashtag like #lipstickmafia which only has 39,000 posts.
You'll have a much easier time getting discovered for smaller hashtags that are relevant to your account.
Do your research and develop several lists of smaller hashtags you want to use in your posts.
You won't want to use exactly the same hashtags on every post so mix it up.
You can use up to 30 hashtags per post.
Make sure to use 30!
